A teenage survivor of last month's school shooting in Parkland, Florida has shared a powerful speech at a rally against gun violence in Washington DC.

Emma González is a student at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, where 19-year-old ex-student Nikolas Cruz opened fire in February.

On Saturday (local time) she addressed the massive crowds at the March For Our Lives rally.

"In a little over six minutes, 17 of our friends were taken from us, 15 were injured, and everyone, absolutely everyone, was forever altered," she said.

"Everyone who was there understands. Everyone who has been touched by the cold grip of gun violence understands.

"Six minutes and twenty seconds with an AR-15."

She then read the names of the 17 classmates and teaching staff killed in the shooting.

Ms González ended her speech with a long silence, bringing the runtime of her speech to 6 minutes and 20 seconds - the same length as the shooting.

"Since the time that I came out here, it has been six minutes and 20 seconds," Ms González said before leaving the stage.

"The shooter has ceased shooting and will soon abandon his rifle, blend in with the students as they escape and walk free for an hour before arrest. Fight for your life, before it's someone else's job."

Hundreds of thousands of people joined the March for our Lives rallies across the US and around the world.
