NZ sends full archery team overseas for first time

For the first time Archery New Zealand is sending a full team of archers to compete overseas.

The team of 16 left for Shanghai on Thursday night, and are gearing up to take part in the first World Cup Series event this year.

They make archery look easy, but competitor Sarah Fuller says it's taken hours of training for them to perfect the skill.

"I try and get up here up to 30 hours a week... It's almost like another full time job," she told Newshub.

"Most of the other guys are up here six days a week."

Fuller is one of 16 archers preparing to compete at the World Cup Series next week.

It's her eighth international event, but the first time she's been a part of a full Kiwi team.

"It's really exciting to be able to take someone with me. I usually do this by myself or with a very, very small team," she said.

Eight women and eight men make up the team. At just 18 years old, Emily Cavell is one of the youngest Kiwi competitors.

"It feels incredible, I'm starting to get super nervous but also really excited... It's my first time on a World Cup team," she told Newshub.

She'll be up against some tough competition from the likes of Korea, Japan, the US and Britain, and Fuller says unlike our Kiwis, most of them are full-time professional athletes.

"We all work full-time or study full-time and things like that so it's going to be a great competition for us to get a lot of experience, and hopefully we'll do really well," she said.

With Hollywood making archery increasingly popular, Fuller said the team has the support behind them.

While a movie was what inspired Cavell to take up the sport.

"There's this Disney movie called Brave where this girl called Merida shoots arrows off horseback and I thought, 'Wow that's so incredible, I'd love to do that'," she said.

And for those wanting to learn, the team says it's as simple as picking up the bow.
