The New Zealand Transport Agency has opened one lane on the badly damaged Takaka Hill road, allowing access in and out of Golden Bay for the first time since Cyclone Gita swept through the town four days ago.

Convoys are slowly making their way across State Highway 60 in the Tasman region.

The highway was blocked by slips following Cyclone Gita last week.

Motorists are advised to expect long wait times, and priority is being given to "essential" vehicles.

The convoys will continue until 5pm on Sunday. NZTA cannot yet say when the road will be fully open.

Meanwhile, the state of emergency has been lifted in New Plymouth.

The district council has been flat-out restoring water supply to the area, which is now back up and running.

However, Mayor Neil Holdom says all residents must continue boiling water.

The boil water notice is expected to be lifted in a week.
