The Kiwi man keeping peace between North and South Korea

Tensions are high between North and South Korea, but there's a Kiwi man is in the middle of it all just trying to keep the peace.

Meetings take place in what's known as the Truce Village, but right now the north and south aren't meeting face to face. That's where Lieutenant Payton Kaiwai comes in.

He's stationed with UN security forces on the southern side of the neutral space called the demilitarized zone.

It's his job to relay messages to his counterparts in the north, 30 metres away which he says isn't always straightforward.

"The process for delivering messages is quite set in stone. First of all there is a hotline from my office to the North Koreans. They stopped answering our hotline in 2013 but we still try to pass the message originally over that," Mr Kaiwai told Three's The Project.

"But since they haven't picked up since 2013 we walk down to the military demarcation line and tell them to pick up their phone.

"We try the phone again and since they don't pick up we walk back down… and read it to them as they film us."

Mr Kaiwai says their part is crucial to keep tensions down.

"There's relative calm through normality and regularity in the way we conduct ourselves."
