The cast of hit comedy Parks and Recreation have fired up at the National Rifle Association (NRA) after it used an image from the show to promote their cause.

It comes after fierce debate in the US sparked by the country's latest of many mass shootings, with 17 people gunned down at a school in Florida last week.

The NRA, a powerful lobby group that aims to maximise firearm sales and minimise gun control, used an animated gif of Amy Poehler's character Leslie Knope in a tweet, arguing against greater restrictions on firearms.

Poehler's response was, simply, "f**k off".

Mike Schur, who co-created Parks and Recreation, included her reply in his reply to the NRA's tweet.

"Hi, please take this down. I would prefer you not use a GIF from a show I worked on to promote your pro-slaughter agenda," he tweeted.

"Also, Amy isn't on Twitter, but she texted me a message: 'Can you tweet the NRA for me and tell them I said f**k off?'"

Nick Offerman, who plays Ron Swanson, published a tweet saying Parks and Recreation represented the opposite of the NRA and requested they "eat shit".

Co-stars Adam Scott and Aubrey Plaza both tweeted similar sentiments; he telling the NRA to "stay the f**k away", she with an animated gif of her own.

Chris Pratt, another notable Parks and Recreation cast member, hasn't joined in the conversation on Twitter, nor has the NRA responded to the cast and crew's messages.
